Heritage Science

High resolution digitising, non-destructive analysis and secure dynamic display of cultural heritage materials These products and services for cultural heritage materials were developed at the University of Kyoto, in Professor Ari Ide’s advanced imaging technology laboratory, as part of their cultural heritage research programme. Papers from this group are available in pdf format here.

High resolution digitising

A high-resolution large flatbed scanner has been developed to digitise large wall paintings. It uses an image grabber with low-level controllable homogeneous uniform light and is capable of achieving 1300dpi over a 100cmx200cm area. The scanner has been designed to be a very stable structure, as typically a large painting will require a scan of between 10-20 hours duration. This system has already been used on numerous Japanese and Asian as well as some European paintings. As these paintings tend to be very valuable and irreplaceable the scanner is transported to the museum and a highly skilled team digitises the painting on site.

Non-destructive analysis software-PIGMALION

Software has been developed to analyse the different pigments in digitised paintings. A material database of105 pigments has been acquired from cultural heritage paintings using Synchrotron Radiation X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry. Then the colour matching software PIGMALION allows the pigments in the digitised painting to be matched with the pigments in the database to identify and verify the painting’s origin.

High resolution imaging display software-AMATERAS

AMATERAS an ultra high resolution and high-speed image browsing system for interactive public display stations in museums and art galleries. A slide show describing AMATERAS is available here.
